Pet Friendly Flooring: Best Flooring Options for Your Floors & Your Pets!

admin • Jul 13, 2020

Are you one of the 85 million families with a pet in the United States? Whether you have a tiny kitten or a huge great dane, there is one thing that most pet owners have in common: cleaning up after your pet.

Pets are bound to make messes and mistakes in the home. Between tearing up a carpet to peeing on the kitchen tiles to scratching the floor with their nails, your floors can take a beating when you have a pet. Not to mention that some floors can be hard and uncomfortable for your pet.

With pet friendly flooring, you can keep your pet safe & comfortable and protect your floor from moisture, stains, scratches, and damage.

Read on for some of our expert flooring recommendations that will please both you and your furry friend.

Natural Stone Tile

Natural stone tile is a popular pet friendly flooring option thanks to its durability and scratch-resistance, especially when paired with a floor treatment or sealant.

Sealants also help natural stone tiles resist moisture and staining, which is important with pets. Pets love to roll in the mud, spill their water dish, jump out of the bathtub, pee on the floor… you name it, they’ll probably do it.

Stain resistance will be key for your floors, and natural stone plus a sealant is a great way to do that.

Natural stone is also pretty easy to clean in these situations, which is another plus.

However, natural stone can be slippery, making it a bit hard for pets to walk without slipping. Consider adding some rugs or pet beds to give them a bit more traction for walking. These also provide some cushion from the hard and cold surface of the stone, which can also be uncomfortable for pets.

Luxury Vinyl Flooring

Luxury vinyl flooring is a great option if you have a pet as it’s very resistant to stains, dirt, and scratches. Like the sealant on natural stone, we would recommend choosing a vinyl tile option with a special protective coating (usually with urethane ) to make it both more comfortable and durable for your pet.

Vinyl floors can also fit into many home styles and designs thanks to the wide variety of options to look like stone, wood, ceramics, and more. Vinyl flooring can also come with textured surfaces to provide slip-resistance and traction for your pets helping them walk around while simultaneously reducing the noise of their nails on the floor.

Along with comfort, style, and durability, luxury vinyl flooring is very easy to clean, meaning accidents, hair, and dirt are no problem.

Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors are gorgeous… and often expensive. So why would you want hardwood when pets could stain or scratch them ?

The key is choosing the right wood. Choose hardwood flooring with a high Janka rating. Janka ratings rate the hardness, and, thus, durability, of the wood. Good options for pet friendly flooring are very hard woods like cherry, walnut, teak, oak, and bamboo.

Those woods are more resistant to scratches, damage, and stains, meaning it’s durable and can withstand  as is common in households with pets, and is also more durable.

Hardwood is also very easy to clean, which is a necessity for pet friendly flooring, and its natural hardness makes it a good choice for pets as well.

Avoid “softer” woods like pine or fir as these can easily scratch and absorb dirt & stains that your pets drag in.

Pet Friendly Flooring That Looks and Feels Great

Pet friendly flooring is important for not only the look & feel of your home. It’s also important for the comfort of your pet!

Slippery or uncomfortable floors can cause them aches and pains, not to mention scratches and damage. Choosing one of these options or some of our other flooring options can protect both you and your beloved furry friend.
