Marble vs Porcelain Tile: Which should I Choose?

admin • Jul 26, 2021

Marble and porcelain are both lovely in their own right. However, both tile materials have advantages and disadvantages over the other. In this article, in the spirit of “competition,” we’re going to talk about the big showdown of marble vs. porcelain tile!

Marble v. Porcelain Tile

Marble

Marble is a natural stone that is renowned for its exquisite beauty. No two pieces of marble are the same. Each marble tile contains its own unique veining designed by Mother Nature herself. Additionally, marble has a natural sheen that no manufactured tile can possess. Marble sets the beauty standard for tile materials very high.

However, this natural stone has more to offer than just its looks. Marble is an incredibly high-quality stone and can boost the real estate value of any home in which it is installed. With the proper sealant, a marble floor becomes completely resistant to stains and water.

This sophisticated natural stone tile looks stunning in nearly any room of the house. It makes great kitchen countertops, kitchen backsplashes, bathroom countertops, shower tiles, and flooring in any room.

There are some difficulties with marble tile, such as the maintenance it requires. Like all natural stones, marble requires regular maintenance and yearly resealing to maintain its pristine quality. Additionally, not all cleaners are appropriate to use on marble surfaces. Only use non-acidic cleaners on marble tile as this material is very vulnerable to acidity.

Porcelain

Although it is a manufactured material, porcelain can be equally as beautiful as marble. In fact, some porcelain tiles are made to mimic the look of marble. Porcelain tiles can also be made to look like other materials, such as granite, slate, limestone, or even hardwood. These tiles come in various appearances and offer an aesthetic that every homeowner can be proud to have in their home.

Porcelain is extremely durable. Tiles made from this material are water-resistant, stain-resistant, and do not easily scratch or dent. Porcelain tiles are made to last. They tend to be much harder and thicker than other tile varieties, which means they will withstand high traffic areas much longer than most other materials.

A major perk that porcelain tiles offer is that they are incredibly lower maintenance than marble tiles. There is no need to polish or provide regular finishes to porcelain tiles. Also, unlike marble, porcelain is not very vulnerable to acidity, so it’s okay to use any of your favorite cleaners on these tiles.
Porcelain tiles are popular options for bathroom floors and kitchen floors. Porcelain wall tile is always very popular. These tiles are very heavy, so make sure to use the correct adhesive if you choose to install them on any walls, as you would with a kitchen backsplash or in the shower.
