Kitchen Tiles – Options For Your Home

admin • Feb 18, 2021

In the year 2018, sales of ceramic floor tiling in the United States reached $2.935 billion, and the amount used checked in at 2.474 billion square feet. Due to its versatility and durability, ceramic tile has become a popular choice for people to use in their homes. It is one among a plethora of different options that you would have when deciding what you want to use for your kitchen floor. There are multiple kitchen tile options for your home, and the vast array will provide a functional as well as a fashionable solution when it comes to covering your floor. In this article, we will cover the different types of kitchen tiles that you can use and some details about each one.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tiles are made from clay, and are shaped and covered with a glaze and then fired in a kiln. They would make a terrific choice for your kitchen floor because they are quite durable, and easy to clean should anything spill. Ceramic tiles are low maintenance and relatively easy to install. In addition to being heat-resistant and difficult to break, ceramic tiles come in a wide variety of shapes, colors, patterns, and designs, providing you with an abundance of artistic design choices.

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tiles are quite similar to ceramic tiles, with the main difference being that they have sand added to the clay mixture. They are forged using heat and pressure to create a tile that’s harder, denser and more water-resistant than standard ceramic tile. Its increased toughness makes it a fine choice for the floor of a high traffic area like the kitchen. Porcelain tile can get its color from a glass-like coating applied during firing (known as a glaze) or it can have color added to the clay mixture, ensuring that the pattern and color is carried all the way through the tile (unglazed). Unglazed porcelain tiles have the benefit of being resistant to wear and tear, as well as scratching.

Natural Stone Tile

If durability is your chief concern, then you must consider natural stone tile for your kitchen floor. Of your kitchen flooring tile options, natural stone tile is the longest-lasting option available. It is typically available in marble (more on this in a second), granite, slate, limestone, travertine, and sandstone. When it comes to looks, there are few options more luxurious and elegant than natural stone tile. Since it is made from natural stone (hence the name), each tile is unique, featuring natural veining and organic coloring, providing your floors with a beautiful, one-of-a-kind look.

Marble Tile

A variation of natural stone tile, marble tiles share some of the same characteristics as natural stone tiles, namely their durability and opulent look. But they do come in a wider array of colors than other natural stone tiles due to the presence of various minerals within the stone. Marble tiles differ from natural stone tiles in that they are almost always finished. Some common types of finishes include polished, tumbled, brushed and honed. Polished stone, while visually appealing, may become slippery. Honed stone on the other hand, provides a rougher texture and a softer color, which may make it a better flooring choice. Of all the different types of kitchen tiles, marble is generally the most coveted by buyers, and thus adds the most value to your home should you ever decide to move.

Mosaic Tile

Mosaic tile is more of a design preference than a tile material, as the tiles can be created using a mixture of natural stone, marble and ceramic tiles. A mosaic tile can feature anything from interlocking multi-marble colored hexagon patterns to smaller grey “pebble” designs which feature circles of differing sizes all fitted together. Unusual shapes, designs, and color schemes are the hallmark of mosaic tiles, and they could provide you an opportunity to try something different within your home, should you feel like being adventurous in your design choice or that you feel that you need to make a change.

Kitchen Tiles

Because your kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your home, trying to design it can be challenging at times. From backsplashes to cupboard styles, from refrigerators all the way down to the paint on the walls, there is a dizzying number of choices for you to make as a homeowner. It need not be that way. For your kitchen floors, there are a number of different options available to you should you elect to use tiles. You could choose to install ceramic tile, porcelain tile, natural stone tile, marble tile or mosaic tile. Whatever your priorities are, whether you favor durability, ease of maintenance, price, or aesthetics, there is a tile option available to you. Using tile floors, you can transform your kitchen into a useful, dazzling space that everyone wants to be, and where everybody, regardless of where they live or where they’re from, feels at home.
