How to Keep Your White Grout WHITE!

admin • Feb 03, 2022

Now that you’re likely spending a lot of time at home, you might be noticing some things around the house that you did not notice before.

When did those dust bunnies get so big? Where did that stain on the sofa come from? Has that faucet always been leaking?

And when did your beautiful white grout get so… dirty?

Unfortunately, dingy and dirty grout is a somewhat common occurrence, especially with white grout. The good news is that you can get your grout back to its former glory with a few simple cleaning and maintenance steps.

Keep reading to learn how to keep white grout clean!

Start with the Best Grout

You might be surprised to learn that not all grout is created equal. In order to get the best white grout, the grout that stays nice and white & clean, you need to look for grout that resists mold, mildew, and stains.

Opting for other types of grout, specifically those that do not advertise that they resist mold, mildew, and stains might be the cheapest or easiest option at that moment.

But, it won’t be the easiest option when you have to clean it, re-grout, and maintain it. It’s sure to lose its bright white color in a matter of weeks.

Luckily, Tiles Plus More supplies a variety of grout that resists stains, mildew, and mold with no maintenance and no problems!

Use the Proper Cleaners

Before trying any cleaners, try to rinse with hot water. This will remove any grime, dirt, or surface-level stains to help you see what you’re actually dealing with.

Once you’ve done that, you can break out another classic: soap and water. Soap and water are going to be the gentlest option for cleaning grout and will not damage the sealant on the grout or tiles as you do so.

Use a soft small brush, sponge, or a gentle toothbrush to get into the crevices of the grout. Don’t use any hard brushes or anything with harsh metals as this can destroy the grout and loosen your tiles.

If you’re dealing with stubborn stains after trying soap and water washes, try a pH balanced cleaner.

You want to look for cleaners that are non-acidic and list what type of flooring or tile the cleaner is safe to use with. Especially if you are cleaning grout around natural stone tiles.

For example, some cleaners might be appropriate for porcelain tiles but be damaging to more sensitive options like natural stone tiles

See our extensive list of cleaning products here.

The Stone Essentials Line along with our other products are approved by our tile and flooring experts. Not only that, but each of the products we carry is specific about what types of tile & flooring they should be used on, so there won’t be any mistakes!

For Those with Serious Stains

If after all of that work you still have stained grout, we have exactly what you need.

Tiles Plus More carries and highly recommends using Grout 66 cleaner on your grout. This is a professional grout cleaner that works fast and requires no scrubbing : it’s almost like magic.

Depending on the severity of the stains, you can either dilute the solution or, for the seriously stained, use it undiluted.

Simply apply the solution directly to the grout that needs cleaning, leave for 30 seconds to a minute, and then rinse with water. It’s that simple! If you still notice stains, go ahead and try a second round.

After you use Grout 66, you’ll need to re-seal your grout . Grout 66 strips the protective sealant from natural stone tiles and grout, leaving them vulnerable to water damage, stains, and more.

So make sure you take the next steps to protect your grout, marble, and other natural stones.

After your grout is re-sealed remember to use non-acidic cleaners to ensure your grout is protected!

How to Keep White Grout Clean… Long Term!

One of the best things about many types of tiles is that they resist staining and damage. However, grout can’t say the same thing. Grout is much more porous and absorbent than tile.

So when it isn’t sealed properly, or the sealant has been stripped off with harsh cleaners, this means that it can easily stain, absorb water/dirt, and generally get dirty more easily.

However, you can take steps to keep your grout clean once you’ve restored it to nice, clean white.

The first thing is to clean regularly. Instead of waiting until the next time your white grout has turned grey (…or black), keep up a regular cleaning schedule.

This will help you avoid more intense and tougher to clean stains and, of course, keep your grout looking sparkly clean for longer!
