You can have floors that look exactly like porcelain tile or hardwood flooring but are actually luxury vinyl. This material is often easier to maintain, contains zero grout, is more affordable, and feels softer underfoot adding comfort to the awesome style.

Yes, you read that right: luxury vinyl flooring is simple to maintain… once you understand how to do it, that is.

Daily Cleaning

One of the best things about luxury vinyl flooring is how easy it is to maintain and how resistant it is to damage that other flooring types are sensitive to.

However, that doesn’t mean that you don’t have to take care of your floors! There are daily practices that you should practice with your luxury vinyl floors.

To keep your vinyl planks or tiles looking and feeling their best, we recommend daily sweeps or even daily vacuuming to clear away debris, dust, dirt, etc. Dirt, metal, and glass debris over time can lead to scuffs, scratches, and dulling of the overall finish of the vinyl planks.

This “dry cleaning” of the floor is best to do first before you do any mopping or swiffering. Clearing away dirt and debris avoids the potential for scratches caused by the spreading of any metal, glass, and dirt or dust around with your mop.

Our luxury vinyl planks have diamond seal technology and are not easy to scratch. However, if you don’t have one of our brands or brought your flooring somewhere else, we recommend sticking to this method to be on the safe side.

Mopping can be done on a weekly or bi-weekly basis with warm water and gentle soap or neutral pH cleaners. Vacuuming is definitely OK, just make sure not to use attachments or vacuums with very hard or bristly parts as these can scratch the floors (if they are not a Tiles Plus More grade, that is).

Quick note: do not steam clean luxury vinyl flooring. Most standard vinyl flooring materials aren’t made to stand up against steam and this can seriously damage your floors. Opt for brooms, vacuums, and mops instead!

If you are dealing with an aquatec vinyl floor, there may be some wiggle room when it comes to heavy water cleaning. Ask the experts before doing anything, though!

Stains

Luxury vinyl flooring is durable, but that doesn’t mean it’s invincible!

Stains can still occur. Hopefully in your daily sweeping routine you’ll notice any spills or statins before they set in or become noticeable.

However, if you do see stains, simple water and neutral pH floor cleaners with a soft rag should do the trick.

Don’t rub or scrub with harsh bristles as this can damage the flooring. You should also avoid using harsh cleaners, detergents, chemicals, and any other abrasive cleaners.

Not only can these products damage the floor, they likely won’t fix the stain and will leave a dull film behind as well.

Scuffs, Nicks, and Scratches

Scuffs, nicks, and scratches can occur on luxury vinyl flooring. The good news is that you can potentially buff the scuff (say that five times fast) with a gentle melamine pad.

Larger scratches or scuffs are a bit more difficult and sometimes cannot be buffed out at all. If you try to buff it away to no avail, you might need to replace that area of the floor with a new tile or plank.

You should also be wary of how often you buff scratches out of the floor. After a while, this can wear away at the flooring. For small nicks or scratches, it should be OK. But be careful with larger scratches and avoid doing this too often. Instead, opt for a good defense .

The Best Offense Is a Good Defense

Along with these cleaning options, one of the best methods of how to clean luxury vinyl flooring is to set up a defense that protects it from stains, scratches, dirt, metal, glass, etc.

Area rugs, floor protector pads, and doormats are great options for high traffic areas. These will protect the floor itself and add a bit more design to the rooms.

You’ll also want to make sure any furniture that’s on these floors (tables, chairs, etc) have floor protectors on the legs to prevent scratches and to keep the heavy furniture from sliding on the floor.

Avoid dragging your furniture or other items on these types of floors, too, as that can easily lead to scratches and damage.

Unfortunately, dingy and dirty grout is a somewhat common occurrence, especially with white grout. The good news is that you can get your grout back to its former glory with a few simple cleaning and maintenance steps.

Start with the Best Grout

You might be surprised to learn that not all grout is created equal. In order to get the best white grout, the grout that stays nice and white & clean, you need to look for grout that resists mold, mildew, and stains.

Opting for other types of grout, specifically those that do not advertise that they resist mold, mildew, and stains might be the cheapest or easiest option at that moment.

But, it won’t be the easiest option when you have to clean it, re-grout, and maintain it. It’s sure to lose its bright white color in a matter of weeks.

So, you’re thinking about redoing your kitchen , mudroom, or bathroom and you want to give your floors or walls a bit of an upgrade. While many different tile and flooring options can come to mind, ceramic tile and porcelain tile are going to be the top contenders for these locations.

But which should you choose? Choosing between porcelain vs ceramic tile can be difficult seeing as they’re pretty similar and often are chosen for similar reasons.

However, there are some differences that you need to consider before choosing one over the other for your particular project.

In this post, we’re going to explain what each tile type is along with their major similarities and differences.

What Is Ceramic Tile?

Ceramic tiles are fired in kilns at extremely high temperatures. Thanks to the method used to make ceramic tiles, they’re extremely durable, resistant to many stains, and are water resistant.

Ceramic tiles are also quite versatile coming in a wide variety of textures, styles, and glazes to create the perfect tile for each situation.

What Is Porcelain Tile?

Like ceramics, porcelain tiles are some of the most durable and versatile tile options available.

Also like ceramics, porcelain tiles are also fired in kilns at extremely high temperatures. In fact, porcelain is technically a specific type of porcelain.

However, porcelain is fired at higher temperatures than ceramics, which is one of the main causes of their major differences. The higher firing temperature makes porcelain more durable, more waterproof, and less porous.

This increased durability combined with a more uniform composition makes any chips or stains less noticeable than they would be with other tile types.

Like ceramics, porcelain tiles can also have a glaze applied on top of the tile. These glazes make the tiles even more durable, making them resistant to chips, reducing your need for floor scratch repair .

Major Differences

While both porcelain and ceramic tiles are kiln fired, ceramic tiles are fired at lower temperatures than porcelain. This makes ceramic tiles slightly more porous, less durable, and softer.

Ceramic tiles can also be “crackled”. This also makes them more porous than porcelain.

The more porous nature of ceramic means that they stain a bit more easily. Ceramic tiles are also softer than porcelain tiles. This means that they’re easier to cut and can be easier to install, but it also means that they aren’t quite as durable.

This factors into another major difference between our porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles. Porcelain tiles can be used for both flooring and as porcelain wall tile, while our ceramic tiles are only suitable for the walls.

This is because ceramic tiles are often not durable enough to stand up to constant floor traffic, leading to stains, scratches, etc.

Another thing to consider here is price point. This isn’t always a concern, but some projects do need to stay within a certain budget. If you’re looking for the more affordable option, generally ceramic tiles are a bit more inexpensive than porcelain tile.

Floor Scratch Repair DIY: How to Repair Minor Scratches on 3 Different Flooring Types

Beautiful and smooth flooring makes any home feel like it’s classy, stylish, and fresh.

That is until a scratch enters the picture. Scratches aren’t an uncommon occurrence, but that doesn’t make them any less upsetting when they occur.

Whether you’ve found scratches on the ground thanks to your dog’s toenails, your toddler driving a toy truck on your new engineered hardwood floor, moving furniture, or you have no idea where the scratch came from, don’t worry.

There are some DIY floor scratch repair methods you can try before calling in a professional to take a look.

Here are our expert tips on how to try to fix a scratch on your own for three different floor types. Let’s get started!

1. Wood Floor Scratch Repair

Unfortunately, hardwood flooring and engineered wood floors are some of the easiest to scratch. We would recommend having a sealant layer on top of your hardwood floor. This won’t affect the look of the floors and it will greatly increase their durability and resistance to stains & scratches.

Another way to avoid scratches in the first place is to know how to clean engineered hardwood floors properly (as well as standard hardwood floors). This plus the addition of rugs in areas of high traffic can make scratches much more unlikely.

However, if you are unlucky enough to be dealing with a scratch, start by examining the severity.

Minor or soft scratches could potentially be solved with a DIY. Deeper or more serious scratches we would recommend leaving for flooring pros. These require more serious repair to prevent further damage.

If you have the original floor stain, you can attempt to sand the scratch away with sandpaper and then restrain the spot to match the rest of the floor. You can also try to “paint” the stain into minor scratches to cover them.

If you don’t know the original, you can try to match the stain with small patch tests. But, we would recommend something like that be left to the pros.

Some people have found success combining olive oil and baking soda into a paste, rubbing it onto the scratch, and then buffing away the paste after 5-10 minutes with a sponge.

2. Luxury Vinyl Floor Scratch Repair

Luxury vinyl flooring , often sold in tiles or planks, can be scratched or scuffs.

Before replacing the plank or tile, try a few of these DIYs.

First, some have found that the baking powder paste (baking powder + water) could be used to clean and buff out very minor scratches and scuffs.

Others have said that everything from lighter fluid to baby oil can be sprayed on a soft cloth and used to rub the scratch or scuff away.

If you opt for one of these DIY, use a small amount to avoid damaging the tiles. You should also be sure to thoroughly wash the floor once you’re done so chemicals and cleaners don’t damage the rest of the floor.

Similar to the wood’s stain method from earlier, there are specialty floor “markers” that you can try to match to your luxury vinyl floor’s color. Use the marker to fill in the scratch to help it blend into the rest of the floor.

If those don’t work, a professional tile store can help you find a replacement plank or tile to replace a badly scratched or damaged area.

Specialty tile and flooring products can also be successful with scratch repair.

3. Porcelain Tile Scratch Repair

Whether you have porcelain tile floors or porcelain wall tiles (or both!), scratches can be a noticeable slight on the beautiful, smooth look that we love with our porcelain tiles .

Our first suggestion is to thoroughly clean the area. Porcelain scratches, especially in bathrooms , often have soap buildup, dirt, grout residue, fingerprints, and more making them appear worse than they are.

Once it’s all clean, you’ll need to do some more color matching to find a replacement filler that matches the color of your porcelain tile. Gently sand down the area with fine sandpaper to flatten the scratch.

Then, apply the filler and let dry. These items can be purchased at hardware stores separately, or they often come in repair kits as well.

Bottom Line

If you feel confident in your DIY skills, then some of these floor scratch repair options could be your saving grace. However, the biggest takeaway here is that you don’t have to resort to a DIY.

Hardwood flooring often becomes the pride and joy of homeowners who are lucky to have them in their homes! They create a feeling of warm hominess that can’t be replicated with many other types of flooring.

If you want to make sure that your engineered hardwood floors stay looking and feeling like they did when you first moved in or when they were first installed, keep reading.

We’re going to let you know how to clean engineered hardwood floors… along with a few common mistakes you should avoid.

Simple Steps for How to Clean Engineered Hardwood Floors

Learning the basics of maintaining and caring for your hardwood floors doesn’t need to be super complex! You might see articles out there advocating for almost constant cleaning, expensive specialty products, and almost unattainable perfection with your floors.

At Tiles Plus More , we understand that your floors are important, but we also understand that you have a family and a life outside of them! Let us be the ones completely focused on your floors and give you tips that will keep them looking clean without taking over your life.

We think it’s better to keep things simple and consistent rather than complex bouts of intense cleaning. With all that being said, here are our cleaning tips for engineered hardwood floors:

1. Clean Dirt and Debris Regularly

One of the main things to note with maintaining and cleaning engineered hardwood floors is that consistency is key. Now, don’t worry, this doesn’t mean scrubbing on your hands and knees every day!

What it does mean is semi-regular sweeping dirt and other debris from the floors with a broom, vacuum, or cloth. Make sure the broom or vacuum has soft bristles instead of rigid ones, as rigid ones could cause scratches.

How consistently you do this will depend on the foot traffic on the floors as well as your household.

Do you have pets and children running around on the hardwood constantly? If so, daily or every other day sweeps would do your floors good.

Lower traffic areas can go for a few days or a week between sweeps or vacuums.

2. Damp Mop

Running a damp mop over your engineered hardwood floors will pick up any set in dirt or debris that your vacuum, broom, or cloth couldn’t get. However, be careful with this step. When we say “damp” we don’t mean sopping wet.

Overly wet mops or even too much water spilling onto hardwood floors can lead to serious water damage .

Wood will absorb moisture, which can lead to the expansion of the planks, rot, and other damages. Engineered hardwood floors can handle a bit more water or moisture than solid hardwood floors, but that doesn’t mean you should go in with a soaking wet mop.

Dip your mop into water and wring it out before wiping it on the group. Once you’re done mopping, soak up any leftover water with a cloth to avoid any accidental damage.

High traffic areas should be mopped about once per week, while other areas should be mopped once per month.

Along those same lines, we do not recommend steam cleaning for hardwood floors. The steam can add too much moisture to the flooring, which can lead to long-lasting damage.

3. For Deeper Cleaning

Once in a while, it can be good for your floors to get a bit of a deeper clean. In these cases that you want to go all out, we highly recommend speaking with a flooring expert to choose the best products to use with your specific flooring type.

Our experts can recommend the best products and protocols for using those products on your floors. Many engineered hardwood floors have specific kits and cleaners that can be used to clean and maintain the floor over time.

This only needs to be done every few months, perhaps about twice a year.

No matter what you get, we do not recommend using ammonia or vinegar-based cleaners, as these can lead to damage to the floors and any sealant you used.

What Is the KonMari Method? How to Declutter and Tidy Your Home with This Simple Technique

Did you know that the average American home has over 300,000 items in it? Between our need to shop and our tendency to let household chores slide, it’s not hard to understand where all this stuff comes from!

The real question is how to declutter these thousands and thousands of items to leave yourself with things that actually are needed and that matter to you.

Think about it: you could finally see that beautiful porcelain tile that you picked out for your kitchen flooring instead of random trash, papers, clothes, and who knows what else!

The method that many people find works for them is the KonMari Method. You might’ve heard of the professional tidier and organizer Marie Kondo from her Netflix show. In that show, Marie uses her method (the KonMari Method ) to help people declutter, tidy, and let the features of the home shine.

What is the KonMari Method, though? And how can you implement it into your own space?

What Is the KonMari Method?

Despite being used to clean up homes to get ready for deeper cleaning for your flooring, hardwood floors , carpets, shelves, etc, the KonMari Method is more about decluttering than actual cleaning.

Inspired by minimalism, this cleaning & decluttering method involves going through each and every item that you own by category, getting rid of items that don’t “spark joy” in your life along with ones that have no true purpose or need in your home.

There are five distinct categories of items along with 6 rules to follow. Item categories are: clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and sentimental items.

The Rules

The first rule is committing to the process. How many times have you said you were going to switch up your natural stone tiles or devote yourself to cleaning white grout or committing to sorting through your books and then give up a couple of days later?

That doesn’t fly with the KonMari Method.

The second rule that goes along with the first is to constantly visualize the home, room, or life that you want. This helps you stay dedicated and on track with your plan.

Third, get to discarding . Discarding items that don’t bring joy or purpose to your life anymore is perhaps the most well-known part of this method.

Marie believes that ridding yourself of these items first will open up space and leave you only with the things you truly want, making cleaning and decluttering easier.

But, don’t forget to sincerely thank each item before you give it away! Acknowledging material items like this helps strengthen your connection with your items . This makes each one you take on in the future more special making it easier to maintain your minimal and decluttered home.

Rules four and five are to tidy by category, not location , and to tidy in order . That means clothing first, then books, then papers, etc.

Lastly, with each and every item, ask yourself if it sparks joy . This should be a gut feeling! If you feel it, keep it. If not and it holds no purpose in your life, then toss. Simple and effective!

FLIP OR FLOP? Best Floor Tile Options for Resale

If you are designing for your forever home, dig into “your style.” Look through magazines and cut out rooms that make you happy, rooms that have you stop and stare, rooms that bring you a sense of calm and peace, etc.

Use Pinterest and Houzz to create an inspiration board. Tag images that you would love to make a part of your home.

All these photos will most likely have at least one thing in common that’s drawing you to it: a color, a pattern, a design era, specific tile options, a layout, etc.

This will help you pinpoint what looks you gravitate towards. Showing those inspiration pieces to our designers will help us find just what you are looking for.

However, keep in mind that there is a difference between designing for yourself and designing for future buyers.

Design for the Short Term

When you are looking to design for resale or plan to stay in your home short term, designing is less about your personal taste and more about:

When it comes to floor tile options, though, you’re looking at a design element that is more permanent and harder for buyers to change themselves. That’s why choosing the right tile is so important: it could make or break your sale.

Here are some tips we have up our sleeves:

What’s Timeless

Natural stone tile (or even other types of tile that look like natural stone) is arguably the most timeless option. Carrara Marble, Calacatta Marble, and Statuario Marble are our favorite timeless options.

Carrara Marble and Statuario both have hues of only two colors: grey and white. These neutral colors are perfect for your bathroom tile , kitchen, or entryway. Neutral colors like the ones in these natural stones are also great for fitting into a variety of buyer aesthetics.

If you feel as though you’d like to add a gold or creme to your grey and white tones, you can go with a Calacatta Natural Stone. However, this is a little more bold for resale and should be done for more upscale properties.

All of these natural stone looks also come in the form of porcelain tile . Go with porcelain tile options if you’re on a tighter budget, if the property has harsh water, or if you want something that’s lower maintenance.

What’s Trendy

This is tricky. You want to be trendy, but not overly trendy or else in a year when you want to sell, every trend you went with will likely be over.

For example, deco encaustic tiles are very trendy right now. But, beware of what is too on-trend or you’ll have a resale that screams “made in 2020.”

When picking trending tile options, balance it out with timeless styles like a classic black and white pattern, a soft design, or something that lends itself to the history or style of your home.

What’s Safe

The safest tile for a flip would be a greige tile in a 12 x 24 format or larger.

12 x 12 square tiles are becoming a thing of the past. Yes, even if you lay them on a diagonal (been there done that).

The color greige is what you will be looking for as it is a soft combination of grey and beige. This neutral coloration will help the potential buyers envision themselves in the home.

They’ll also easily be able to add their own style touches to a neutral area instead of trying to fit their style around yours.

If deciding on new furniture and paint colors, for example, both warm and cool tones will be an option for them with greige tiles.

Hardwood flooring is another option that’s timeless, trendy, and safe.

But, is it practical for a bathroom, kitchen, and mudroom? Not likely. That’s where porcelain comes in once again to save the day.

We highly recommend porcelain tiles that look like hardwood planks, or even a parquet, for any room in your home.

The same rules apply with porcelain wood-look tiles: use neutral colors, match the overall design style of the home, and make sure the shapes/design are trendy but not too niche.

With summer approaching, it’s the perfect time to make your outdoor area the perfect hangout.

When choosing the best option for outdoor tile, you really need to consider the elements.

Why Outdoor Porcelain Tile?

The Problem with Other Options

Many think of natural stone tiles for the outdoors because of their natural look. Ceramics are another choice that people think would be appropriate. Both aren’t the best choice for the outdoors, and here’s why.

Natural Stone Tile

First of all, natural stone tiles are porous , meaning that salt, sand, sleet, heavy rains will affect your natural stone tiles negatively. This can cause damage, scratches, stains, and more.

Outdoor applications with natural stone tile can be compared to an outdoor pebble or rock: when water is continuously coming in contact with it, it can change shape becoming smoother or some places and rougher in others.

They can also become oxidized, which results in a rusty-colored & weathered surface. You can see in our post how to clean natural stone tile and how to maintain it to make sure your natural stones are sealed properly indoors.

Outdoors, the constant maintenance required of sealing season after season is usually not worth it. Especially when we offer porcelain tile that looks just like natural stone that’s also rated for the outside weather without maintenance.

Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tiles should never be used on the floor or ground. They are not floor rated and are likely to crack.

Outdoors, ceramic tile is best for backsplashes. If you have an outdoor bar and grill and are looking to add ceramic tile to the backsplash, we recommend staying away from ceramic tile that has a crackled glaze.

A crackled glaze ceramic tile is absolutely stunning. However, it needs to be properly sealed (see our sealing and maintenance options ) at least once a year for indoor use and more often for a shower system application.

This is because, like natural stone, ceramic tile is porous and can collect water, dust, and dirt easily.

The Versatility of Outdoor Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tile is extremely diverse and comes in a variety of sizes.

A 4 x 12 porcelain tile can be stacked or laid herringbone outdoors. A 12 x 12 or 12 x 24 look flawless transitioning from an indoor to outdoor space. A porcelain plank can be used and laid like hardwood .

The sizes that porcelain tile come in are just the beginning. Porcelain can be made to look like natural stone such as a slate, which is heavily used for outdoor spaces but made of the durable and appropriate porcelain material.

Porcelain tile can also be made to look like a wood parquet or plank for a log cabin. It’s so versatile that it can be rustic, natural, modern, beachy, and more in both indoor and outdoor spaces.

You’ll also choose whether it has a polished or matte finish, with either high or low texture. It can come in one color or have a high gradient throughout each piece. The options are endless!

We recommend using a matte finish tile for outdoor use. The polished may become slippery when wet, which can be an issue near pools, with rain, etc. The look of a matte tile is also more organic and stays true to the aesthetic of an outdoor patio or four-season porch.

The texture is completely up to you and your design!

A fun way to prepare for next spring is to hang the clothes you plan on keeping facing towards you. AKA the hooks on the hangers should be facing you when you hang them.

Many people consider the living room or the kitchen to be the heart of the home. Well, if those are the heart, then the bathroom is the brain: things just wouldn’t work without it!

Bathrooms are necessary parts of the home and they’re also one of the most valuable as well.

Maintaining your bathroom will benefit you by creating a beautiful space to feel clean and refreshed while also helping to increase the value of your home.

However, that can’t happen if you don’t keep up with bathroom floor repair and maintenance. Bathroom tile , however beautiful and high quality, still needs to be cleaned and maintained to extend its lifespan and stay looking like it did the day of installation.

To help you keep your bathroom beautiful, we’re going to go over 4 signs you need to keep an eye on. These signs tell you that you need to step up your cleaning and maintenance game as well as take part in some bathroom floor repair.

1. Dirty Grout

Even the most beautiful porcelain, marble, or natural stone tiles can be brought down with dingy and dirty grout!

Unfortunately, white grout can easily become dull and dirty without maintenance, so keep an eye on your grout and set up a regular cleaning schedule to keep it looking clean and white.

The key to cleaning your dirty grout is simple and non-acidic cleaners. Look for pH balanced cleaners that specify which types of flooring they’re safe to use on. We recommend using Stone Essentials products ( Here on our maintenance page ).

Also, don’t be afraid to get on your hands and knees with a soft scrub brush that will remove surface stains and dirt to clean that grout, either!

2. Water Damage

Water damage is the most real, and potentially disastrous, issue that could happen in your bathroom. Between splashing kids in the tub, spills from the sink, dogs drinking out of the toilet, and stepping out from the shower, water is bound to end up on the floor.

If your tiles and floor aren’t maintained properly, this can lead to water damage.

Look for any of the following signs of water damage to see if that’s an issue for your bathroom:

These are just a few signs of water damage in your bathroom. Poor or worn down sealants, cracks in grout, loose or lifted tiles, dripping faucets, and more can lead to this type of damage.

If you notice any of these signs, you should get on bathroom floor repair ASAP to avoid worsening damage and climbing expenses.

3. Gaps in Caulk and/or Grout

Many bathrooms feature caulking alongside the tub, shower, and tile flooring and walls. If there are any cracks or gaps in this caulk, this can allow water to seep into these cracks and underneath your tile floors. The same goes for cracks or gaps in grout as well.

Yes, this applies even if you choose water-resistant options like porcelain tiles or types of natural stone!

During your regular cleaning schedule, make sure you check that the caulk and grout are intact and seals the junction between your tiles and your tub, toilet, between tiles, etc. If need be, apply new caulk and grout to seal any cracks or issues you see.

If there are tiny cracks in your grout, you can easily use the same color caulking to spot apply as necessary. There is no reason to purchase an 8-pound bag of grout for a small fix!

4. Aesthetic Issues

Bathroom floor repair and maintenance doesn’t have to be put off until you find glaring issues. The issue could simply be that you don’t like the look or appearance of your flooring anymore!

How to Clean Natural Stone: 3 Do’s and 3 Don’ts of Natural Stone Floor Maintenance

You’ve had your beautiful natural stone tile , flooring, or counters installed and you’re feeling luxurious! As you should: natural stone tile is sophisticated and classy for bathroom flooring, kitchen backsplash, and many other parts of the home!

In order to keep your natural stone flooring, counters, and tile looking naturally shiny and smooth, you’re going to want to follow a cleaning and maintenance schedule.

There are also things you can do that can harm the look and feel of natural stone, so you need to know how to clean natural stone the right way before diving in.

That’s where we come in! As tile and flooring experts, we’re going to take you through how to clean natural stone tile and give you the top do’s and don’t of natural stone maintenance.

Let’s get started!

DO: Take Preventative Measures

The key to maintaining pristine natural stone tile and flooring is through preventative maintenance!

In high traffic areas where you and your family are walking often, you might want to consider covering parts of the flooring with rugs, runners, etc. On counters, placemats, coasters, and the like are essential.

This will protect those areas from damage from food, spills, shoes, and heavy walking areas. Without this protection, you could see premature damage and a loss of visual quality.

We also highly recommend that you have a sealer for your natural stone. Sealants create a barrier on the top of natural stone surfaces that protect it from everyday damage.

Sealants increase the overall durability of natural stone, which means that your floors will look great for much longer than if you don’t have a sealant applied.

DON’T: Use Cleaners Containing Acidic Compounds

Many floor cleaners contain compounds that work on other types of flooring but that also can seriously damage or harm natural stone. Ammonia, bleach, window cleaner, vinegar, lemon juice, and other acidic components are particularly harmful to natural stone.

In general, before you use a cleaning product, check the bottle to see if it says it can be used on natural stone. If it doesn’t specify that, we do not recommend using it.

Acidic compounds like these can break down the stone and cause damage.

DO: Dust & Clean Spills Daily

Speaking of harmful things on your natural stone tiles and surfaces, spills and dust can cause damage as well.

In areas where you’ll have food and drinks on the surfaces, you should always use placemats or coasters to protect the stone. This is especially true with acidic foods & drinks. Beverages such as soda, coffee, juice, tomato sauce, etc, are acidic and can cause the same damage that an acidic cleaner could.

You want to clean spills as soon as they happen. If the spill isn’t cleaned immediately, it can soak into the natural stone. When cleaning spills, you want to make sure that you blot the spill instead of rubbing it. Rubbing can force the liquid to soak into the stone and can even cause dulling or scratches.

Dusting should be done daily as well. Dust and debris build-up can cause scratches and dulling of the stone, so it should be cleaned daily.

DON’T: Use Soap or Soap Removers

When cleaning, you want to avoid soap and any cleaners that remove soap or mineral deposits.

Soap can leave behind scum that will dull your natural stone. The deposits left behind by the soap are very difficult to remove and removal of that deposit can actually cause damage to your floors or natural stone surfaces.

Soap removers often break down the minerals in the natural stone, which can damage the surface and change the appearance.

DO: Use the Right Cleaning and Maintenance Products

After all this talk of products not to use, why don’t we tell you which tile cleaning & maintenance products we do recommend!

For natural stone, we recommend using neutral pH cleaners that specifically state they are safe for the natural stone you have.

There are many different types of natural stone (granite, marble, limestone… the list goes on), that you’re going to want to make sure that the cleaner you’re using is formulated correctly for your specific stone.

How Often You Should Seal These Areas

In general, the traffic and amount of water on your natural stone tile will determine how often you need to seal your tile.

For example, if you have white natural stone on your shower floor that is constantly being used and soaked with water, you are going to want to seal that three times per year.

If you have natural stone in a high-traffic room containing muddy, sandy, or salty shoes (like a mudroom or entryway, for example), then you should seal that twice per year.

For kitchen backsplash, kitchen floor, or powder room floor, once per year is usually enough.

DON’T: Scrub or Use Scouring Pads

One of the biggest issues for this type of tile is that it can be easily scratched or stained.

If you take the preventative measures that we talked about earlier like using sealants, placemats, carpets, and quick cleaning of dust & spills, that will be extremely helpful for your natural stone floor maintenance.

You also need to be careful with how you’re cleaning natural stone. Scouring pads, brooms with hard bristles, and anything that would be rough with scrubbing are a definite “don’t” with natural stone. This can easily scratch and dull the stone.
